2666: A Novel Roberto Bolano
Publisher: Picador

In the first section of Bolano's 2666, the academics have Archembolo's books in common. Obviously there's a part of me that applauds the willingness of all three critics, at a time when 2666 was the Hot Hot Book in the US, to swim against the current. The book is huge, almost 1,000 pages. Over the past 2 months, I've been reading Roberto Bolaño's encyclopedic novel 2666 in the spare minutes before bed. That is the basis for their connection. Bolaño's final novel, 2666, represents a sort of apotheosis of that dread. When #occupygaddis was proposed on Twitter, I posted it to Facebook, where Pat suggested that J.R. Was all right and all, but if I wanted a real book, see, maybe I'd like to check out this Bolaño fellow with him. Calling Roberto Bolano's 2666 a novel is somewhat misleading. Certainly, it bears many attributes of a work of long fiction – memorable characters, richly evoked locations, abundant action, recurrent themes. He worked on his novel 2666 until his last days, which was finally published in 2004 after his death. Chilean author Roberto Bolaño left behind a surfeit of unfinished manuscripts after his death, but nothing was more intriguing than a reported sixth part of 2666, his bestselling magnum opus. There is something about it in this novel that made it feel at times more real than real and more true than life itself. That's not something very many people are willing to do. As I was reading the passage in Bolaño's novel 2666 on page 40 through 41 I was reminded of the article from the New York Times we read last week entitled, “Analyzing Literature and Words by Numbers”. He was still working on it when he died in 2003. 2666 is a detective novel featuring a character from Savage Detectives as the narrator. 2666.jpg Roberto Bolano's novel 2666 is a turbulent structure. Part of my four-day holiday weekend has been spent thinking about Roberto Bolaño's 2666.
